This is the most homely studio we have been to. No, not cosy, in fact it is a large studio with lofty ceilings, consisting of several spacious rooms. It is refined with full height white cotton hangings, walls of natural stone mixed with plaster, equipped with a huge bar adorned with a vases of lilies, well dosed light and a little garden with lavender in front of the entrance. „I spend all my life in my studio, so I want it to be as pleasant as possible,“ Jorinde explains. „The conversion took two years! And now, that I have been in this place for two and a half years, I am looking for something new, because I need more space. I also want to be closer to the airport, because I am travelling a lot.“
Besides her tremendous artistic career, Jorinde Voigt is a professor for drawing and painting at the Munich Art Academy. Needless to say this is not the main reason for her travel activities. They are necessary, because her work is shown all over the world.
The impact of this recognition on Jorinde is not simply contentment, but ongoing research into her work. „ For me it´s work I am doing for myself. It gives me the opportunity to understand things. At best, the result is not a piece of art, but to discover something about oneself. Something one is sharing with the contemporary environment.“
While pleasant music was playing, Jorinde started to work. Not because she wanted to show us how, but because she was under pressure. „I am going to have a big show at Lisson Gallery in Milan in January, so I am in the final phase“, she excused herself for rushing from her worktable, where she prepared water colour studies to the adjoining room, where huge white paper lengths had been layed out as she directed her staff. She clean forgot about us and we were lucky to witness her in such a concentrated working situation.
Jorinde studied sociology, philosophy, comparative literature and music. After her studies she wanted to become a writer, but soon found this medium to be too limited - so she decided to go on studying art. Looking at her work it becomes clear that all her fields of interest are engaged in her art. This is what makes not only her work, but also her personality so unique.
