Philipp Haager, Dome Paintings 2019 – 2020
Dome Paintings – this is the description Philipp Haager has chosen for his latest series of works. At first glance, they seem to mark a departure from the abstract images of cloud-like nebula, sky and star formations, the firmaments that are usually associated with this artist.
The title of the new series calls to mind paintings on ceilings and the inner surfaces of domes and cupolas, which are often designed to create the illusion of an opening at the top, suggesting in temples and churches that we are stealing a glimpse at another, higher world. The inner eye, which for many years appeared in Haager’s pictures to be directed downward into (psychic) depths, now seems to (physically) gaze upward instead. Indeed, the images themselves have become the eye at the centre of the dome, of the vault surmounting a space.
At the centre of the picture, otherwise the stage for concentrated or scattered events, there is nothingness – nothing remains. Only a vacuum in colouration, a blank space – as if an atomic explosion had occurred, a Big Bang propelling everything to expand out of the picture, all starting from a single point. As if all previous images had passed through this opening – just as the soul flees the body after death through the brahmarandhra, a passage through the skull.
Haager stringently transposes here a series that began as Bonsai pictures into large-format images evoking portals. His glaze paintings, for which he has up to now applied ink in multiple layers onto repeatedly soaked unprimed canvas, wet in wet, are now painted in a direct gesture onto primed, glaringly white surfaces in the alla prima mode. The associative wanderings through silent worlds, sometimes enveloped in luminescent fog and bathed in pale light, have suddenly made way for crystal-clear, sharply outlined chromatic colour schemes.
And yet the Dome Paintings with their effulgent and expressive trompe l’œil splashes of colour take their place seamlessly beside Haager’s virtually monochrome, finely nuanced large canvases with their thinly applied matt and muted grey tones as if it had “only” been a matter of time until these colourful images inevitably emerged from all those that went before.
Haager himself says:
“Every one of my paintings is a song about, an homage to painting itself.
They have no particular concept and pursue no set goal.
They are simply what they are; layered, evolved and blurred, just like our experience of time.”

Dome Paintings – so nennt Philipp Haager seine jüngere Werkreihe, mit der er auf den ersten Blick die ihm gewohntermaßen zugeschriebenen, abstrakten Darstellungen von wolkenähnlichen Nebels-, Himmels- und Sternenformationen, von Firmamenten verlässt.
Nicht von ungefähr klingt im Titel der neuen Reihe der Bezug zu Decken- und Kuppelmalereien an, die eine Öffnung nach oben, in Tempeln & Kirchen in eine andere, höhere Welt suggerieren.
Das innere Auge, das in Haagers Bildern viele Jahre lang in (psychische) Tiefen gerichtet werden konnte, blickt nun einem (physischen) Oben entgegen, ja, die Bilder selbst sind zum Auge der Kuppel des Raumes, des Gewölbes geworden.
In der Mitte des Bildes, wo sonst Geschehnisse, Ballungen, Streuungen stattfinden, ist Nichts - nichts mehr. Nur noch ein Vakuum Kolorit, eine Leerstelle – wie nach einer atomaren Explosion, einem Urknall, nach dem von einem Punkt ausgehend alles aus dem Bild heraus expandiert ist.
Als ob alle vorangehenden Bilder durch diese Öffnung gegangen sind – wie die Seele, die durch das Brahmarandhra nach dem Tod dem Körper entfliegt und den Schädel verlässt.
Stringent überträgt Haager seine als Bonsai-Bilder begonnene Serie in großformatige Portale. Seine Lasurmalereien, die bislang in vielen Tusche-Schichten in wiederkehrend gewässerte, ungrundierte Malgründe nass in nass in den Stoff hinein getränkt worden sind, finden nun in direkter Geste als Setzung der Farbe auf grundierten, grell weißen Malgründen als Alla-Prima-Malerei statt. Den assoziativen Wanderungen durch stille Welten, teils in lumineszente Schleier und in fahle Lichtsituationen gehüllt, stehen nun plötzlich glockenklare Farbakkorde mit scharfen Konturen beiseite.
So selbstverständlich reihen sich die Dome Paintings mit ihren leuchtenden, expressiven Trompe-l’œil Farbklecksen zu seinen beinahe-monochromen, fein nuancierten Großformaten mit den lichten, matten und gedämpften Grautönen, als ob es 'nur' eine Frage der Zeit gewesen wäre, diese bunten Bilder aus allen vorangegangenen herauszuschälen.
Er selbst sagt:
"Jedes meiner Bilder ist ein Lied über und an die Malerei an sich.
Sie haben weder ein bestimmtes Konzept, noch verfolgen sie ein Ziel.
Sie sind nur sie selbst; geschichtet, gewachsen und verwaschen wie unser Erleben von Zeit."
