„don´t black the sun #4“ is part of a series which goes back to a Google image of a marble block in Carrara. Marble as a classic sculptural material refers to themes such as historical objects of longing and the materials of classical male art and at the same time what Carrara is today - an image of structured nature, a supplier for mega-buildings, kitchens and toothpaste and a tourist magnet. Looking forwards and backwards at the same time is also reflected in the title and is a statement of position. It points to human’s basic needs, including nature as a fundamental one.
A fundamental interest of mine is to articulate the complex, evolving relationship between humans and technology. I explore the changing identity of images, language and physical aspects. I am considering the impact of technological advancement, digital thinking and platforms such as Google on social perception.
My artistic practice is intuitive, with the motifs emerging in an ongoing process. Shapes and silhouettes flow smoothly from one artwork to another. Google images or other existing historical or contemporary forms, methods, norms and narratives serve as intellectual and compositional starting points which I translate into painting; they remain as a phantom presence on the canvas or find themselves as an essence in a sculptural form.
A frequently recurring theme is that of translation. This refers to both the translation from one language into another and the transfer from one level of reality to another. The works are highly abstract so that the original motif can no longer be deciphered and the transience of images and language is emphasized.
