You would not expect an artist studio in the complex which houses Philip Groezinger’s studio. He had to move here because he was gentrified from his former location in Neukoelln; still it seems that in this elegant historic commercial building he has found the ideal neutral space for his powerful art.
Heavy topics like the „Battle of Waterloo“, „Stellar Wars“ and often quotes from films are part of Groezinger’s paintings, always twisted into grotesque sceneries. In his „Blechtrommel“series he paints women warriors. Sometimes elements of German „Gemuetlichkeit“ slip in, being destroyed at the same time by his sarcastic humor. The series „For the Temporary Amusement“ is a perfect example of this attitude.
How did Philip Groezinger get involved in art? „My father, a professor of graphic design, used to drag me into museums“, Philip explains. These roots might also be the reason why he is so interested in printmaking – which he takes to another level through animation.
