Negra Bernhard is currently working in the Expanded Pictorial Space in Vienna under the tutoring of Daniel Richter.
Her exploration of painting as an inventory of what is going on in and around her, as well as in what is out there in the world, carries a profoundly personal signature while using the anachronistic medium.
Her manuscript is a searching, it oscillates equally between sarcasm, uncertainty and bewilderment towards the world in which she lives and finds strong, independent formulations.
Under the aspect that there is an intensified, international approach of younger female artists to dealing with the possibilities of painting, which has not yet quite been reflected in Austria, the painter Negra Bernhard, maiden name Dragoljić, shows both in content and formal references, as well as in her Biography as a human of our time.
What is it about your studio space that inspires you?
Having space in a relationship, with the world.
What sounds, scents and sights do you encounter while in your studio?
From Star Band De Dakar to Max Richter. Coffee and Cigarettes. Sight-wise there's just the stuff I'm working on. Mostly I push past everything else.
What is your favourite material to work with? How has your use of it evolved throughout your practice?
Oil on canvas. Understanding comes with layer by layer of paint.
What themes do you pursue?
Socio political humor with a focus on partly abstracted figuration.
What advice has had the biggest impact on your career?
None so far.
If you could install your art absolutely anywhere, where would that be?
How about a cinema for paintings, where people sit together and look at one painting for 2 hours?
If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?
I couldn't choose just one.
If you weren´t an artist, what would you be doing?
Probably Physics, as I used to study that before.
What are your favourite places besides your studio?
Emporios, Kalymnos. It's a small village on a greek island in the Dodecanese.
