Claudiu Ciobanu (born 1984) is part of the young generation of artists from Iasi, Romania having graduated from the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, UNAGE Iasi.
He pursued studies in painting through the Erasmus program at the University of Salamanca, Spain, where he discovered techniques of experimental painting and
drawing. His studies in Spain concluded with an exhibition project of drawings that was later selected in 2009 for the "Young Romanian Art 10" exhibition,
"Slightly Bored," at the Noua Gallery, Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), Venice.
Claudiu Ciobanu is a visual artist specializing in painting and drawing. Recently, his focus has shifted towards studying the body and its complex relationship with society.
In 2024, he participated in a research residency on the topic of "body politics" at the prestigious Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, Germany. Following this residency,
he developed a series of works, some of which will be showcased in an exhibition at the Artep Gallery in Iasi in the fall of 2024.
His most recent exhibition took place in 2023 at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna and was titled "Memento vivere." This exhibition discusses the implications of the
posthuman condition and how technology afects our lives, presenting a new perspective in which contemporary painting can be used to explore posthumanist
philosophy.
He has participated in various national and international projects, being present in exhibitions in Israel, Washington, Berlin, and Vienna. Among his most recent personal
projects, we mention the exhibition "Memento Vivere," ICR, Vienna, 2023, or "SOLARIS" at Artep Gallery, Iasi, 2022.
In Claudiu Ciobanu's painting, one can observe an imprint of his own experiences, addressing themes such as memory, space, time, imaginary realities, all centered on
self-reflection and introspection. His research focuses not on the emotion brought by his work but rather on the pursuit of truth and the attempt to achieve clarity, that almost
impossible synthesis between metaphysics and art.
