Jonathan Meese wins the 10th Hans Platschek Prize

Congratulations to Jonathan Meese for winning the 10th Hans Platschek Prize. The prize is awarded at the 14th art Karlsruhe. The exhibition takes place from 16 to 19 February.

“Jonathan Meese is an artist who takes a wonderfully exuberant delight in language. He expresses this joy in the ingeniously bizarre titles that he gives to his paintings and in the “ERZ” mantras that cover and accentuate his pictures”, says Florian Illies from Villa Grisebach auction house in Berlin, who is a juror for this year’s tenth Hans Platschek Prize. A former editor at “FAZ” newspaper and co-founder of “Monopol” art magazine, Florian Illies finds the special connection between image and text not in Meese’s paintings, but in the artist’s texts, which “are distinguished by the utmost precision and beauty in their wildness, their bold distortions of language, and their apparent absurdity.”

Alongside paintings, sketches, collages and sculptures, Jonathan Meese’s oeuvre also includes installations, video art, performances, theatrical works and happenings. Meese has been present at numerous national and international one-man shows and group exhibitions since 1999. Artworks by Meese and Platschek two artists encounter each other in a visual dialogue at the Hans Platschek Foundation’s stand in Hall 1: Jonathan Meese receives ample space for a one-man show; and directly opposite this exhibit, visitors can view selected works by Hans Platschek, who passed away in the year 2000.
