First ever Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art to take place in 2018

With the announcement of a new biennial to open in Riga, Latvia in 2018, the art world should expect to see an influx of works from Baltic artists in the market for contemporary art. Agniya Mirgorodskaya, founder of the Riga Biennial Foundation, has stated that a primary objective of the biennial is to “grow and diversify the audiences for international contemporary art from our location in the Baltics.” There will be sizable representation of work by artists from the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania at the Riga Biennial, a majority of which will be new commissions. The new biennial will help expand the contemporary art world, bringing artists from the Baltic and Nordic regions into the international spotlight.

Katerina Gregos, the artistic director of Art Brussels and curating the Belgian Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale, will be the chief curator for the event.
