Every last Thursday of the month there is an Art Walk through the art collection of de Doelen.
The colourful paintings by the Rotterdam artist Anuli Croon give public spaces a special atmosphere and identity. She made paintings in hotels and hospitals, but also on the street. In her work we often see hands and faces, but also architecture and stylized cityscapes.
Her design for the Willem Burger Foyer adapts to the architecture and function of the space. The mural, realized with the help of Michelle Geurts and Willem Kerssemeijer from Atelier Leo Mineur and Allard Assen, is monumental and has a powerful influence on the experience of the foyer. The atmosphere of the city is captured in the work: the colours, imagery and representations are unmistakably Rotterdam-esque, just like de Doelen itself.
The painting combines figurative and abstract elements. Sometimes Anuli zooms in on certain details, while at other times she distances herself. This dynamic of enlarging and reducing makes the work a visual experience.
‘There is much to discover in my painting,’ says Anuli. ‘I hope that the work functions as a presence, but not an overly emphatic point of orientation in the space. Let it be a conversation piece for the users of the foyer.’
Whereas the painting by Louis van Roode in the Willem Burger Foyer refers to the decade that de Doelen was established in, Tronie & Stad wants to connect de Doelen with the city in a current, contemporary way.
