German artist Thomas Rentmeister (*1964) uses found objects and everyday materials
as the main elements for his works, which refer to Minimalism but freshen up their
severe stylistic vocabulary with a healthy dash of Post Pop and Dadaist nonconformity,
his oeuvre is humoristic without being cynical; it’s cheeky and playful as well as
concentrated and straight. In his show ‘Sterne und Streifen’ at SALOON, Rentmeister
shows a series of newer and older sculptures and objects from the eighties to 2016,
including some of his most recent works.
Thomas Rentmeister studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and is Professor at the
Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. His work has been seen in numerous institutional
solo exhibitions including Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Kunsthalle Nürnberg; Museum
für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main; Centraal Museum, Utrecht; Perth Institute of
Contemporary Arts. Group shows include Museum aan de Stroom, Antwerpen; Deichtorhallen
Hamburg; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro and Museum
Tinguely, Basel.
