“The idea is to reach the unknown by the derangement of all the senses.”
Arthur Rimbaud

Kyle Fitzpatrick is a painter whose work explores landscape.

Using a palette of dark colours and with his larger works, frequently applying paint to canvases laid on the floor, Fitzpatrick’s paintings are predominantly abstract – at times portraying organic, earthly scenes, whilst at other times invoking celestial visions or ‘inner-space’.

Whilst ever sensitive to the history of landscape painting, Fitzpatrick’s work and methods are chiefly influenced by his own interest in literature; principally, the nineteenth century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, and subsequently, the American Beat Generation; Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg – whose works and ways of living have had a deep impact on Fitzpatrick since his early teens.

By combining these influences with his own personal experiences of travel and of being in nature, Fitzpatrick’s aim is to uncover and to reveal, sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly, what the experience of being in a landscape can feel like.

After a canvas is nearly complete, Fitzpatrick frequently adopts alchemical approaches where he will experiment by rapidly applying different pigments with different materials in order to throw and alter the final composition.

The aim of these experimental ‘last minute’ gestures is to challenge the subtlety of the more methodical painterly approach used up to this point.

Through these actions Fitzpatrick encourages the viewer to think about the random, wild and imbalanced forces of nature, whilst at the same time, fixing our gaze with the composition beneath – a serene space that elicits nature’s vastness – a space in which we can share his experience.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA 1980, Fitzpatrick lives and works in Berlin.
