What is it about your studio space that inspires you?

Solitude and spatial limitations. It's a condensed space I'm working in and it allows to focus on small formats. At night it turns into a lit up glass box. During warmer months it becomes a transitional space inhabited by insects and dust.

What sounds, scents and sights do you encounter while in your studio?

Recently I moved into a new studio space. An incredibly clear space. The previous studio was a paned verandah surrounded by the woods. I enjoy its noise and silence as well as disturbing it when I'm listening to music. The glasspanels are several decades old. They keep me attentive, as their irregularities and my motion create movement in the surroundings where there is none. I do love the scent of oil colours and the mediums used to dilute them.

What is your favourite material to work with? How has your use of it evolved throughout your practice?

Oilpaint, paper and detours. Its odour. It's the most sensual to me. Besides its body, scent and consistencies it goes along with the trial and error work approach. Surprise me - yes! The speed of painting compared to the amount of time considering and reevaluating the decisions that have been made.

What themes do you pursue?

Work evolves in the spheres of experience, memory, bodies, language and the utter joy of exploring colour and shape. At its peak not knowing and lurking surprises take over.

What advice has had the biggest impact on your career?

Bei sich bleiben. I utterly cherish chats with friends and how unknown thoughts loom there about painting.

What are your favourite places besides your studio?

I love a good kitchen, preferably with a couple of mates eating, chatting for hours.
