Editor's Notes

Slippery slope (orange) 2017 is a painting about shared histories, the past and present share a proximity with one another. Like a DJ mixing different styles of music, this series of paintings looks at and questions notions of progressive development in science, culture and contemporary living. Medieval art though crude in its lack of classical forms was disparaged for centuries by the Renaissance which 'recovered' aspects of classical values and skills. The nineteenth century saw a revival of interest in Medieval art that provided an extremely important frame of reference for many of the developments in the Modernist program. Two figures sourced from Medieval art are coupled in an act of ablution, the painting references purification rituals that are commonly practiced in religious doctrines. The empathic nature between the two figures is registered or suspended in another spatial, political and cultural context.
