“I don’t use painting as a medium,” says Wolfgang Betke, “I play with the colours and wait for something to happen on the canvas or on the aluminium that then doesn’t let me go. This demands the luxury of time. If I have no time, there is no painting. […] With each painting, each sculpture, I venture into rough terrain without knowing how things are going to proceed. To put it more precisely: I start running although there is no path yet. My painting movements are what forms the path.”
With a colour scheme and flighty approach to form resembling none more than Egon Schiele, Betke manages to make a face without features stare into our soul with its palimpsest expression.
