Deposition 2017 analyses and displaces the spectacle of class structure by aligning it with high culture and its inherent value systems. 'Lad culture' is a British subculture initially associated with the Britpop movement. Arising in the early 1990s, the image of the "lad" or "new lad" was that of a generally middle class figure espousing attitudes typically attributed to the working classes. The subculture involves young men assuming an anti-intellectual position, shunning sensitivity in favour of drinking, violence, and sexism. People at moments of excessive drunkeness are often used as moral propaganda by the tabloid press as examples of public deviance without acknowledging the surrounding complexities of the social political context that precipitated this 'bad behaviour'. Emile Durkheim (1858–1917) observed that 'Deviance pushes society's moral boundaries which, in turn leads to social change'. This painting focuses on proximities between ideals and non-ideals, seduction and repulsion, excess and reduction, expression and realism, it refers to the clashes between opposite cultural value systems, failure, and the desire to escape.
