Berlin’s Philip Topolovac sets about to rework artefacts of the tumult of the mid-20th century. While in some of his works, such as 2013’s Metro Shafts, Topolovac elevates the hidden and mundane to objets d’art, 2016’s Braciere reinterprets Rome’s Palazzo della Civiltà as a brazier. Topolovac reduces this white marble icon of Mussolini’s Italy to a rusted façade, a weathered, utilitarian object. Braciere is a bonfire of the vanity of fascism, of the irrational underpinnings of so-called rationalism. For Topolovac, the only thing behind fascism’s proud surface is destruction.
The inscription reads: "Un popolo di poeti di artisti di eroi di santi di pensatori di scienziati di navigatori di trasmigratori" ("A people of poets of artists of heroes of saints of thinkers of scientists of navigators of transmigrators").
The artwork can be easily dismantled and reassembled. The ash drawer pulls out.
