I make text-based works (mostly paintings) as a dialogue with the times we live in.

KNOWN FOR HIS LARGE FORMAT BLURRY PAINTINGS WITH DOTTED TEXTS and his endless investigation into the structure and language of an artwork, Raúl Cordero (Havana, 1971) has established a very personal universe that explores the visual manifestation of language. Cordero investigates at all times the cognitive links between «looking at» and «reading» art.
In his paintings, the mismatch between texts and images resembles the constant state of distraction in which we live in: we look at something while thinking about something else at the same time. Cordero shows you the world through his eyes in his paintings, in what he has called “the three ranges”: one, is the open wide view (landscapes, general scenery); the second, gathers things and people we are surrounded by (objects, light, shadows, portraits, interiors) and the third, is a metaphorized representation of the quantum reality (energy, particles, vibration); that is, what we can’t see but only feel and still, is what we and everything else is made of.
For him, the change in behavior of a subatomic particle upon being observed is the most interesting of his approaches to art, since it means a different alternative to the old canons of abstraction and figuration in the history of image making. Cordero’s paintings mix difficult-to-see images with difficult-to-read texts that delay the experience in front of them and thus, alter the rapid pace at which art is seen today.
His work can be seen in public collections around the world, including the Musée National D’Art Moderne Centre Pompidou in Paris, France; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA), The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, in the United States of America; El Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, in Cuba; The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (SMAK) in Gent, Belgium; El Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) and Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (MEIAC) in Spain; among many others.
