Read moreIn his artistic practice Kneer investigates the origin, logic, and contingency of inherited sociocultural symbol and allocation systems. Central to his work is the examination of subconscious dualisms and ‘abnormal/pathological’ deviances as judged from a bourgeois-normative perspective. This includes obscure and strongly emotionally-occupied objects and practices as well as artefacts and phenomena of everyday and popular culture commonly situated beyond ‘good taste’ (kitsch/camp, Mannerism). We live in a shared fiction made of agreed-upon symbols and codes which we’ve ascribed certain meanings, but which usually don’t possess any intrinsic worth. The vulnerability of these symbol and allocation systems offers potential for an artistic reevaluation. Within the framework of a Western world order founded on oppositions and dualisms, the artist is interested in exploring alternative manners of representation that elude the value attribution implicit in binary categories such as ‘pretty/ugly’, ‘sick/healthy’ and ‘right/wrong’.
