Is painting dead? You will find the answer in Florin Kompatscher ‘s studio, where painting is vividly alive and thriving. “To complete a good painting is very hard and complex” Florin states. Looking around I can see none of the struggle but instead, painted joy.

He paints with a refined lightness and also in the way he uses colours. His oil paintings almost resemble watercolours and probably for this reason he rarely chooses to use the white. His coatings of color are thin and transparent and the background often remains visible. In doing so, his paintings appear strikingly spatial.

Florin Kompatscher´s credo: “Good paintings originate only if you proceed precisely and with discipline. Leaving nothing to chance”.
Presently he is experimenting by painting on reflective surfaces, which add reflections of light and color depending on the surroundings.

Florin seems be extremely well informed about his peers, yet completely independent and almost classical in his approach to work. His armchair reveals a lot. He found it in Paris, where he lived and worked, and took it to his subsequent residences in Hamburg and Cologne, until it finally arrived here in Berlin. His studio is the place where he can not only work, but also come to rest. At times he sits in his noble-tattered armchair and climbs into transcendental spheres…

The Sheltering Sky, Katja Bloomberg - 2011

... Florin Kompatscher is a traveller who journeys between the inside and the outside. In the rhythms of his densely abstract paintings, he connects his own thinking with a universal perception. A decisive factor here lies in the relationship between the subconscious and painting, which Kompatscher, born in 1960 in Southern Tyrol, negotiates in both a sensitive and visually stunning manner. Each one of his large-format paintings forms an individual intellectual and spiritual space in the infinite temporal flow.
… his painting doesn’t actually feature narration and representation at any point. Rather, he is excavating the memory of time. …
Kompatscher’s paintings dissolve the boundaries between fiction and reality, allowing the familiar to collide with the alien. …
