Occupying two entire floors, the painter Daniel Kannenberg works and lives in a former factory in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The two areas are clearly separated because Daniel likes to commute between his two worlds.

The interior of his studio looks craftsman-like at best: Rustic hard wood floors smirched with (picturesque looking) paint, beautiful wooden windows and an old iron door. The courtyard is surprisingly green and quiet. This imparts the space with a unique atmosphere. It almost makes us feel as if we were in a countryside house in Tuscany.

Asked about his themes, Daniel begins by speaking about his earlier works, small figurative paintings, which he says have led him to the bigger formats he works on now. „During this development voodoo has remained a theme because art has a lot to do with voodoo.“

In his studio today, we can see figurative as well as abstract works. The abstract pieces seem to be based on representational objects, such as florescent lamps. While his voodoo inspired paintings were kept in dark grey/brown/black shades of colour, his palette is getting more and more vivid these days.

Daniel hates chaos in his environments and keeps his studio well structured and tidy. So when we find hundreds of cotton buds lying on the floor they catch our attention.  It turns out that these untidy lapses are elementary for his work! He uses them to remove excess paint and to add detail to his paintings.....
