One could see in the figure of the astronaut, which has appeared in Christine Krämer’s recent paintings, the alter ego of the artist. They could be regarded as self-portraits, that is, portraits of the artist as an astronaut, which would undoubtedly be correct. Yet the images possess a dimension that goes beyond this. They pose the question of what art is. In the relation between measurable and immeasurable space. But this relationship also invokes existence in indeterminacy under certain conditions. And when we talk about indeterminacy, then the stars are not far. We need holes in the real in order to see them. Maintaining these holes open occurs as painting. The artist knows that the greatest danger lies in the windowless. The window that her paintings open, opens onto the chaos of indeterminacy. At the same time, it is a window of the imaginary as much as of the real, since the imaginary allows us to see the real differently.
