Andreas Schulze’s studio

consists of two parts: a working space and a lounge. The lounge – which should rather be named “Wohnzimmer“, is no less than an art installation. It is bursting with objects from flea markets and antique shops, which Andreas visits in almost every place he travels to. Here you find him in between furniture from the Memphis Group, Meissen Porcellain, lace from St.Gallen –where he had one of his recent museum solo shows, Märklin toy-railway environments, wooden figures from the Erzgebirge, all kinds of lamps, and last but not least Steiff animals: from which he has one of the largest collections you have ever seen. He mixes valuable items with trashy things –which quickly become precious too, because he finds them. All of these collectibles are part of Andreas Schulzes artistic universe. Even when he sits down for a break, he is nevertheless working, because he remains consistently open to inspiring himself for further artworks. As many know, there are not only paintings, but also designs for objects such as like vases, mugs, animal sculptures made from Murano glass, carpets, and many more artworks that come from Andreas Schulze’s studio. Painting in situ, often combined with room installations, are also a large part of his range.

Switching to the less fancy but more serious floor, Andreas takes us to his airy studio, which is attached to a green courtyard, from which you can step inside. There Andreas Schulze is working together with two assistants on several paintings in parallel. Most of them are for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Sprüth Magers Gallery and still in the early stages. To give you an idea, you may take a peek below. As you can see, Andreas Schulze, who does not drive, is presently painting cars. The name of his show consequently is ”traffic“. His vehicles are like creatures emerging from his inner self: each of them is a friendly and lovable character of unique style. However, technical details do matter! “This one still needs a door“ Andreas explains, “and that one will get some luggage on top.“ Knowing Andreas Schulze, you can be sure it will be suitcases by Louis Vuitton, with lots of nostalgic hotel stickers on them.

Artitious is delighted to present "Erbsen" (peas) an Image Movement edition of jumpers by artist Andreas Schulze. Since the 1980s, the pea has been one of the favorite motifs of the Cologne-based painter: starting with the graphic series "Raststätten" (Roadhouses), as an abstractive element in numerous portrait works, or lastly and most prominently in the large installation "Erbsenstraßen" (Roads of Peas) at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt in 2014. When asked in an interview "Why peas?", he gave the cogent answer: "cucumbers would have been bad".

The jumpers were manufactured in Berlin. Made of 100% organic cotton (GOTS), screen-printed with phosphorescent color by Handsiebdruckerei, Berlin, tailored and sewed by Zwischenmeisterei 110%ig. The jumpers are available in grey and black, in sizes S, M, L and XL, at the price of 350 € each. They come with a certificate in a numbered edition of 72 copies. Images @ SprüthMagers.
