This classic aristocratic rocking Bohemian style studio in Berlin is the example of a perfect life & work union. As a single parent of a successful football player, Alexander wants to work where he lives. He loves to work in cosy, airy environments.
Only familiar with his mysterious, almost monochrome portrait paintings I was positively surprised by the variety in his work. A spectacular painting of two red cats caught our attention – they looked perfect – but Alexander said it was still unfinished.
As a master student of A. R. Penck he graduated from the Duesseldorf Art Academy and was awarded the Max Ernst Fellowship shortly thereafter. Not only does he do panel paintings but also site-specific wall paintings and window designs for churches and banks.
Why is his work so enigmatic? Because he is a famous astrologist too! Why is he (sometimes) so down to earth? He works as a football trainer from time to time. How can somebody fulfil all these tasks? Alexander von Schlieffen can… because he is a magician.
Ein persönlicher Erlebnisbericht mit den Gemälden von Alexander von Schlieffen im Private Art Salon, Hamburg "Es war ein großartiges Erlebnis, die Bilder von Alexander von Schlieffen im privaten Raum zu erleben. Die Wahrnehmung der Bilder war für mich eine ganz andere, als in den Galerieräumen (weiße Wände und kaltes Neonlicht) und zwar so was von total unterschiedlich, wie ich es niemals für möglich gehalten hätte. Null Zugang in der Galerie, dagegen eine unglaubliche Tiefe und Bereicherung im privaten Raum! Was ein Ortswechsel an der Wahrnehmung bewirken und ändern kann! Faszinierend! (Schon Leonardo da Vinci schrieb in seinem „Traktat der Malerei“, dass man Gemälde am besten bei Sonnenuntergang betrachten solle, da nur zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Farben Ihre volle Pracht entfalten können. Was ist Sinn und Hintergrund des „White Cubes“? Für Malerei scheint er nur bedingt eine ideale Präsentationsweise zu sein.) In der Verdichtung, die der private Raum bietet, entwickeln die Bilder von Alexander von Schlieffen geradezu etwas Mystisches und Meditatives. Sie erzählen unaufdringlich und wie selbstverständlich ihre eigene Geschichte und strahlen dabei eine magische Energie aus, die einen fesselt und die man nicht missen möchte! Der Dialog soll nicht enden. (Man kann diese Arbeit nicht reproduzieren. In der Reproduktion verlieren sie ihre besondere malerische Tiefe und Sinnlichkeit, wirken vielleicht sogar fast plakativ. Das Gegenteil ist der Fall, wenn man die Werke real vor sich hat.) Das Konzept des Private Art Salon ist eine wunderbare Idee, Kunst im privaten Raum zu erfahren und wie es sich anfühlt, mit ihr zu leben. Ein Besuch ist jedem zu empfehlen, der die außergewöhnlichen Exponate von Alexander von Schlieffen noch nicht gesehen hat oder in den gewöhnlichen Galerieräumen genauso keinen Zugang gefunden hatte. Es ist ein Ereignis der besonderen Art! Fazit: Ein Leben ohne Kunst ist möglich, aber sinnlos..))" Dirk Vorwerk
What is it about your studio space that inspires you?
It has a light and warm atmosphere and seems to be a salon rather then a working space. Beauty is an important source for my inspiration.
What sounds, scents and sights do you encounter while in your studio?
I love to have children around when I am working.
What themes do you pursue?
My painting is not about what we see but how we see what we see, which is not necessarily what you see when you just look. So it’s all about light and space and textures and sensuality, which is something very spiritual for me.
What advice has had the biggest impact on your career?
Recently a lady came to visit my studio and when she saw a portrait drawing I did of my friend and art teacher in high school, she said: „This is so intense, even if you then did not know what you know on art nowadays..“
If you could install your art absolutely anywhere, where would that be?
One of the most beautiful and striking places I have been to in my life is the „Villa Dei Misteri“ in Pompeji. You can transform a space with painting and turn it into something magic. That is what I love to do, wherever it is possible and appreciated.
If you could only have one piece of art in your life, what would it be?
Carlo Mollino’s „Bureau“ from 1950.
If you weren´t an artist, what would you be doing?
Being also an astrologer I do what I would do if I wouldn’t be an artist. Nevertheless if both could not be possible, I would love to be a musician.

Cape Town, SA.
